February feels warm and dry

February brings sunny days, warm afternoons and cooler evenings. The high reaches 31°C, while the low is 17°C. Rain is scarce, so you can explore the old town's temples, stroll the Mekong riverfront and take a day trip to Kuang Si Falls without often losing time to showers.

The afternoon heat can make Mount Phousi's steps feel steep. Save the climb for later in the day, and don't expect much shade on the way up. January is a little cooler, while March gets hotter and wetter.

Temples and February holidays

Makha Bousa, a Buddhist holiday, may fall in February; its date changes each year. If it does, look for candlelit processions at temples such as Wat Xieng Thong. Be respectful, keep quiet and ask before taking photos of worshippers.

Travelling with kids? The morning market is a gentler outing than a hot afternoon climb, with fruit, noodles and local snacks to try.

Crowds and a local tip

February is still part of Luang Prabang's popular dry-season stretch. December and January are the best months overall, but February remains busy compared with the rainy months. Guesthouses and restaurants can feel full, and prices may stay higher than in the quieter wet season.

For a useful local pause, order khao soi in the old town: Luang Prabang's noodle soup is different from the northern Thai dish with the same name. Then walk along the Mekong as the afternoon cools. If you're visiting Kuang Si, go when the falls are flowing well, but don't count on February rain to make them fuller.
