Luang Prabang Weather in December

December weather

December is one of Luang Prabang's best months for being outdoors. Days feel warm rather than sticky, and evenings cool off, so you can enjoy both a slow riverside dinner and a walk through the old town. Rain is scarce, with just a couple of wet days on average.

The dry weather suits temple-hopping at Wat Xieng Thong, cycling between the old town and the Mekong, or taking a boat to Pak Ou Caves. The Kuang Si waterfalls are still worth visiting, though their flow may be lower than in the rainy season. If you're hoping for lush, full rivers and waterfalls, December isn't the best time.

Festivals and crowds

Laos National Day falls on December 2. You may see local celebrations, though it's not a major visitor festival in Luang Prabang. Hmong New Year celebrations can also fall around this time, but dates vary by community and year.

December is high season, and it's busier and often pricier than the wet months. The old town's guesthouses, restaurants and sunset spots fill up, especially around the Christmas and New Year holiday period. If you hate crowds, visit Mount Phousi earlier in the day instead of joining the sunset rush.

A local tip

Cool, clear mornings are a lovely time to watch the alms-giving ceremony, when monks collect food from residents. Keep your distance, stay quiet and don't use flash. If you want to give alms, buy sticky rice from a local vendor and follow their lead; don't treat the ceremony as a photo stop.

Travelling with kids? December's comfortable sightseeing weather makes temple visits easier, but the early ceremony can be a tough start to the day.
