When to go to Luang Prabang: a seasonal guide
Cool and dry: November to February
This is the best stretch, and December and January top the comfort score. Days are warm and easy, around 27–28°C, and nights drop to about 14°C. You'll want a light jacket for the early alms giving, when monks walk the streets at dawn to collect food from locals. Mornings by the Mekong can feel properly chilly.
It's also high season. Guesthouses in the old town fill up, and the night market on Sisavangvong Road gets busy. If you hate crowds, aim for early November or February, when it's still dry but a bit calmer. Climbing Mount Phousi for sunset is easy now, though you won't be alone up there.
Hot and hazy: March to April
Heat builds fast. April reaches 35°C, and it's the hottest month in the table. Rain starts to return too, with showers on about 11 days. Some years, farmers burn their fields around this time, and smoke can dull the views. That's worth knowing if you're after photos from the Kuang Si waterfalls or the hills.
Pi Mai Lao, the Lao New Year, falls in mid-April. Expect water fights, parades and a lot of laughing. You will get soaked, so keep your phone in a dry bag. It's a great time if you want energy and don't mind heat. It's less good for long walks.
Rainy season: May to September
Rain comes on most days. August is the wettest month at 248 mm, with July close behind. Showers are often heavy but short, and the sun barely shows. The Nam Khan and the Mekong rise and turn brown, and some boat trips and trails get muddy or cancelled.
There's an upside. Hills turn bright green, prices drop, and cafés on Kingkitsarath Road are quiet. If you're happy with a book and a rain-free hour for the temples, it can be a calm time. Travelling with kids or planning to trek? Skip it.
October: the sweet spot
Rain eases to 55 mm, and the landscape is still lush. Early October may bring the Boat Racing Festival, held on the Nam Khan, with long teams of paddlers and crowds along the bank. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check them before you book flights. Later in the month the sky clears, and you'll often get cool-season charm without the full crowds.
