When to go to Chiang Mai: a seasonal guide
Cool season: November to February
This is the sweet spot, and January scores best of all. Days are warm but not heavy, and evenings are cool enough for a light jacket. December and January nights dip to about 15–16°C, and it's colder up on Doi Suthep and Doi Inthanon.
It's also high season. Flights and rooms fill up around Christmas and New Year, and the Sunday Walking Street on Ratchadamnoen Road gets shoulder to shoulder. If you hate crowds, aim for early November or February.
Loy Krathong and Yi Peng usually fall in November. Floating lanterns fill the sky, and people set small candlelit baskets on the Ping River. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so check them for your year.
Hot season: March and April
It gets properly hot. April tops out at 36°C, and it's the hottest month in the data. Afternoons are for cafés with air-con, the moat-side temples, or a swim.
Farmers burn fields across northern Thailand at this time, and the air can turn smoky. If you have asthma or just dislike hazy views, skip these weeks. Doi Suthep's viewpoint isn't much fun in a haze.
Songkran, the Thai New Year, lands in mid-April. It's a huge water fight, and you'll be soaked within minutes. It's fun if you're ready, and tiring if you aren't. Many shops close for a few days.
Rainy season: May to October
Expect rain on most days, often 22 or more days a month, and August is the wettest at 246 mm. Showers are usually heavy bursts, not all-day drizzle, but the sun barely shows. The air feels sticky, with humidity around 85–89% from August to October.
There's an upside. Hotels are cheaper, the rice fields around Mae Rim and Mae Taeng turn bright green, and temples feel quiet. Elephant sanctuaries and treks still run, though trails get muddy and slippery. Roads to waterfalls like Mae Ya can be rough.
Which month should you pick? For a first visit, go from late November to February. For heat-proof city wandering and cooking classes, March works. On a tight budget and fine with wet shoes? Try June or early October.
