Chiang Mai Weather in December

Mild days outdoors

December is one of Chiang Mai's most comfortable months. Afternoons are warm rather than scorching, and rain is rare, so you can spend longer exploring temples and markets on foot. The old city's moat and lanes are pleasant for a slow wander, while the dry weather suits a trip up Doi Suthep.

Evenings feel cooler, especially after a day in the sun. December has shorter daylight than many months, so leave time for outdoor stops before dusk. The table rates comfort excellent, but that doesn't mean every hour feels cool.

Holidays and crowds

Thailand marks the late King Bhumibol's birthday on December 5, also observed as Father's Day. It's a national holiday, though daily life in Chiang Mai may continue much as usual. Christmas isn't a Thai public holiday, but some hotels and restaurants in the Nimman area mark it.

December is high season. You'll find more visitors around Tha Phae Gate and the old city than in the quieter rainy months, and rooms and flights can cost more. The city also gets busier around New Year, so popular spots may feel crowded.

If you hate crowds, visit the old city temples on a weekday rather than during the New Year rush.

Make the most of it

The dry, sunny weather works well for a day trip to Doi Suthep or a walk around Wat Chedi Luang. It's less suited to anyone hoping for empty streets or low-season prices. For a cooler break, browse the shops and cafés along Nimman Road in the evening.

A Chiang Mai-specific tip: take a songthaew, a shared red pickup taxi, up to Wat Phra That Doi Suthep, then agree on your return plan with the driver before you go. The hilltop temple is a worthwhile outing, but getting back down can take longer when visitor traffic builds.
