Dry days for exploring

December is one of Yangon's best months for a visit. Days are warm, with highs around 31°C, but rain is scarce and the air is less sticky than in the wet season. You'll have plenty of sun for the Shwedagon Pagoda, colonial-era streets downtown and a ride on the Yangon Circular Railway.

The midday heat can still feel tiring, especially on long walks around downtown. Save exposed sightseeing for the cooler parts of the day, and take a break in a tea shop when the sun feels strong. December isn't the month for lush, rain-soaked scenery, but getting around is easier.

Christmas and crowds

Christmas Day brings church services and decorations to parts of the city, though it isn't as widely celebrated as Buddhist festivals. You may notice the season around central Yangon, but don't expect a citywide festival. New Year's Eve is also marked in some venues.

If you hate crowds, December may feel busy: it's high season, and visitors come for the dry weather. Hotels and popular sights can be busier than during the rainy months, and prices may be higher. November is also a good-weather month, while January is warmer.

A useful Shwedagon tip

At Shwedagon Pagoda, you must remove your shoes and socks before entering. Carry a small bag for them, so you're not left holding footwear as you walk around the broad marble platforms. The stone can feel hot in the afternoon, so visiting earlier makes the barefoot circuit more comfortable.

Travelling with kids? The pagoda's long walkways and open spaces are easier to enjoy before the day heats up. December's dry paths also make a visit simpler than during the monsoon.
