Visiting Yangon in June
Rainy days in Yangon
June feels hot, sticky and grey. Rain falls on most days, and the cloud cover leaves little sunshine. Showers can interrupt walks, while wet streets make getting around downtown slower. It's wetter than May, but July brings even more rain.
You can still visit indoor sights like the National Museum of Myanmar or take a break in a teashop over mohinga, a fish-noodle soup. Save long outdoor walks for gaps in the rain. A day at Kandawgyi Lake is less appealing when paths are soggy and skies are dull.
Quieter streets, fewer plans
June is low season in Yangon. You'll usually find fewer visitors than in the cooler months of November and December, and accommodation rates may be lower. Rain can make sightseeing less convenient, though, so a quiet city doesn't always mean an easy day out.
If you hate crowds, June may suit you, as long as you're happy to change plans when showers arrive. There isn't a major fixed June festival to build a trip around. Eid al-Adha may fall in June, but its date shifts each year, so local celebrations vary.
Make the most of a wet day
For Shwedagon Pagoda, go when the rain eases and allow time for the broad terraces to dry. You'll need to remove your shoes before entering, so a plastic bag can help keep them together while you walk barefoot. If rain starts, take a taxi rather than a long walk between the pagoda and downtown; heavy showers can leave streets unpleasant underfoot.
Travelling with kids? Keep an indoor stop in reserve, such as the National Museum, for the afternoon showers. The heat and humidity can feel draining even when the sky is overcast, so avoid packing too many outdoor sights into one day.
