Visiting Yangon in October
October: rain eases
October still feels hot, sticky and cloudy in Yangon, and the rating of 2.2 out of 10 reflects that. Rain falls on around 17 days, which is less than in September but still enough to keep things damp. Streets can stay wet, so afternoon plans may need to bend around a downpour.
You can still browse the covered stalls of Bogyoke Aung San Market or wander downtown's old colonial buildings between showers. Shwedagon Pagoda is lovely in the evening, but rain can make its marble floors slippery. Save long outdoor walks for clearer spells, and don't count on a reliably dry day at the beach.
Lights and local holidays
Festival timing can change the picture a little. If Thadingyut, the Festival of Lights, falls in October, you'll see homes and pagodas lit to mark the end of Buddhist Lent. Its dates follow the lunar calendar, so it can fall in another month. When it does land in October, expect more local activity, especially at pagodas.
Travelling with kids? The lights can make an evening visit to Shwedagon memorable, but crowds may build around the festival. Outside the holiday, October is usually quieter than the busy November and December season.
A shoulder-season visit
October sits between the wet season and Yangon's drier, more comfortable months, so it's a bit of a middle ground. Visitor numbers and prices are generally lower than in November and December, though they can rise around Thadingyut. It works if you're happy to fit sightseeing around showers rather than chase clear skies.
At Shwedagon, leave your shoes at the entrance and carry them in a small bag if rain is about. You'll need to remove them before entering the pagoda grounds anyway, and wet shoes are easier to manage than damp socks. The heat and humidity can make a full day out tiring, so keep some indoor time for downtown tea shops. If you have the choice, though, November is the better pick: rainfall drops to about 29 mm, and December is the other top month for dry, comfortable weather.
