Visiting Yangon in February
February weather
Yangon feels hot and mostly dry in February. Afternoons can reach 36°C, so walking around Shwedagon Pagoda in the middle of the day gets tiring. Mornings suit sightseeing in downtown Yangon, where you can explore the old colonial streets before the heat builds. The dry weather also makes a stroll beside Kandawgyi Lake more pleasant than in the rainy season.
There's little rain to interrupt plans, but don't mistake that for mild weather. Save longer walks for the cooler parts of the day, and avoid a long, exposed visit to the pagoda at midday. March gets hotter, while January is a little cooler.
Holidays and crowds
Union Day falls on 12 February and marks the joining of Myanmar's ethnic groups. It's a national holiday, though celebrations can vary from year to year. Chinese New Year sometimes falls in February too; Yangon's Chinatown, especially around 19th Street, is a good place to look for festivities when dates coincide.
February remains part of the dry-season travel period, so popular sights can feel busy. It's generally less in demand than the best months of November and December, but don't count on a quiet city or low-season prices. If you hate crowds, visit Shwedagon early rather than at sunset.
Making the most of your visit
February's long sunny days work well for pagodas, markets and short trips around the city. You'll have less rain to contend with than in the wet season, but the strong afternoon heat makes a packed sightseeing day uncomfortable. Take a break indoors during the hottest hours, then head out again as it cools.
For a Yangon-specific tip, visit Bogyoke Aung San Market in the morning, then cross to nearby Pansodan Street for a look at its old buildings. Check opening days before you go, as the market closes on Mondays and public holidays.
