Visiting Yangon in July
July: rain shapes the day
Yangon is hot, sticky and very wet in July. Rain falls on 27 days, and the sky stays mostly cloudy, so don't count on long spells of sunshine. Showers can slow traffic and leave streets around downtown puddled or flooded.
The high humidity makes walking around Sule Pagoda and the colonial-era streets tiring. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible, and save the covered stalls at Bogyoke Aung San Market or a long lunch for rainy spells. Beaches and day trips aren't a great bet this month. You'll get more from indoor stops and short outings between showers.
Waso and quiet streets
July often brings Waso, the Buddhist month when Buddhist Lent begins. The date changes each year, but you may see offerings of robes and candles at Yangon's pagodas. Shwedagon Pagoda is a meaningful place to observe local worship; be respectful and keep the visit quiet.
If you hate crowds, July is a calmer choice than November and December, Yangon's best-weather months. It's low season, so rooms may cost less than in the cooler, drier months. The trade-off is rain that can disrupt plans.
Make wet-weather visits easier
Travelling with kids? Keep the day loose, with a sheltered stop near downtown for when the rain gets heavy. Don't plan a packed walking route; puddles and traffic can turn short trips into slow ones.
At Shwedagon, you must remove your shoes before entering. Carry a small bag for them, since the ground can be wet after rain. A visit still works in cloudy weather, but allow time to move carefully around the pagoda's broad terraces.
