Visiting Yangon in August
August rain
August feels hot, sticky and very wet in Yangon. Highs reach 30°C, with warm nights around 25°C and humidity at 88%. Rain falls on 27 days, and the sky stays cloudy most of the time. You'll get little sunshine, so don't count on long, dry stretches.
Short visits to the Shwedagon Pagoda or the National Museum can still work between showers. Yangon's covered markets and tea shops are handy when rain sets in. Long walks around downtown are less appealing: pavements can be slick, and heavy showers can slow traffic. Beaches and outdoor day trips are a gamble.
What's on
August doesn't have a major fixed festival in Yangon. Waso, a Buddhist month linked with the start of the monks' rainy-season retreat, can fall partly in August, but its dates change each year. You may notice offerings at pagodas, including Shwedagon, rather than a city-wide event.
If you hate crowds, this is a quieter time than November and December, Yangon's best months for weather. August is part of the wet low season, so visitor numbers and hotel prices are generally lower than in the cooler months. The trade-off is rain on most days.
Make rainy days easier
Travelling with kids? Keep a flexible day for indoor stops, and leave extra time for car journeys when the rain is heavy.
For a practical local tip, take a short ride on the Yangon Circular Railway from Yangon Central when the weather allows. You'll see everyday life beyond the main sights, but don't rely on it as a dry-day plan: platforms and open carriages offer little shelter. For a cosy break, order mohinga, a fish-and-noodle soup, at a downtown tea shop while a shower passes.
