Bangkok Weather in December

Cool, dry days

December is one of Bangkok's most comfortable months. Afternoons feel warm rather than punishing, while evenings are pleasantly cooler. Rain is rare, so you can spend time outdoors without constantly ducking into cover. November is wetter, and January is hotter, making December a good fit for sightseeing.

The Grand Palace, Wat Pho and the riverside paths are easier to explore in this weather. A boat ride on the Chao Phraya also works well. Save long walks through open areas for the cooler parts of the day; the sun can still feel strong.

A festive month

Bangkok marks King Bhumibol's birthday and Father's Day on 5 December, and Constitution Day on 10 December. Around Christmas and New Year, malls such as CentralWorld put up seasonal displays, and the city has a lively holiday feel. Christmas isn't a traditional Thai holiday, but you'll see decorations in major shopping areas.

If you hate crowds, avoid CentralWorld and the riverside around New Year's Eve. Popular sights and shopping districts get busy, and December is high season. Hotels and flights often cost more than in quieter months, especially around the holidays.

Make the most of it

Travelling with kids? December's drier weather makes a day at Dusit Zoo's former site less appealing; instead, try the shaded paths and exhibits at the Bangkok National Museum, then take a river ferry.

For a practical local tip, use the Chao Phraya Express Boat to reach Wat Arun and Tha Tien. You'll skip some road traffic, and the river breeze is a welcome break from warm streets. At Tha Tien, try a bowl of tom yum before heading back.
