December: wet and cloudy

December stays warm, but frequent rain and thick cloud can make the island feel sticky and grey. Rain falls on many days, and sunshine is limited, so don't count on long, bright beach afternoons. You can still enjoy a swim between showers, eat by the sea in Fisherman's Village, or visit Wat Plai Laem when clouds gather.

Keep boat trips and beach plans flexible. Heavy showers can disrupt outings, and exposed viewpoints are less rewarding under low cloud. If you're hoping for clear skies and dependable beach weather, February is a better choice.

Christmas on Samui

Christmas and New Year bring a festive feel to resorts and restaurants, even though these aren't traditional Thai holidays. You'll find special meals and celebrations in tourist areas, while local life continues as usual elsewhere. The weather can still be wet, so outdoor plans may need a change.

December is part of Samui's high season, with more visitors and higher prices than in the wetter months. Crowds and costs rise most around Christmas and New Year. November is rainier, while January is drier, so December sits between a very wet month and improving beach weather.

For a practical rainy-day stop, visit Big Buddha, also called Wat Phra Yai, on the island's north-east coast. It's close to Bang Rak, so you can pair the temple with a meal nearby rather than making a long trip in uncertain weather. Keep some flexibility in your plans: showers can interrupt a day, but they rarely mean you're stuck indoors all day.
