December: warm and very wet

December stays warm, but frequent rain and thick cloud can make the day feel sticky and grey. Showers fall on most days, so outdoor plans may need to pause. George Town's shophouse-lined streets, museums and covered clan houses work better than a long beach day.

You can still visit the Khoo Kongsi clan house or browse the cafés around Armenian Street between showers. Skip a tightly timed outdoor itinerary; heavy rain can make walking uncomfortable and disrupt plans.

Christmas and New Year

Christmas and New Year bring festive displays and a holiday feel, especially around malls and hotels. There isn't a major December festival I'd build a trip around; George Town Festival takes place in another part of the year.

Families visiting during school holidays may find more people around the waterfront and heritage core. Christmas and New Year can also mean higher room rates than quieter months. December is wetter than November, while January usually brings less rain.

For budget travellers, December's wet weather and holiday demand can be a tricky mix: you may find fewer dry sightseeing hours, while festive dates cost more. Keep your plans flexible, and save the Kek Lok Si Temple visit for a break in the rain.

A practical local tip: use the free CAT bus around George Town's heritage zone when showers hit. It connects sights such as Fort Cornwallis and the Clan Jetties, so you can cut down on wet walks. Don't count on blue skies at the waterfront; take in the jetties when the rain lets up.
