December feels warm and sticky in Phuket, with highs around 28°C and nights staying close to that. Rain falls on many days, and cloud often dulls the sunshine, so don't expect long, clear beach days. Showers can interrupt a boat trip or a walk around Old Phuket Town, though they needn't spoil the whole day.

The sea is generally more inviting for beach time and island trips as the wet season eases. Keep plans flexible, and avoid relying on perfect skies for a long day out to the Phi Phi Islands.

Events and crowds

December brings the Phuket King's Cup Regatta, usually held around Kata Beach, along with Christmas and New Year celebrations in resort areas. The holidays aren't quiet: December is high season, and beaches, restaurants and hotels get busier than in the rainy months. Prices also tend to rise compared with November.

If you hate crowds, skip Patong on New Year's Eve and look for a calmer evening around Rawai instead.

Making the most of your trip

With frequent rain and limited daily sunshine, mix beach time with indoor stops. Wat Chalong is a useful change of pace, while Phuket Old Town's cafés and Sino-Portuguese streets work well when showers pass through. January is drier than December, so shifting your trip later may mean fewer rainy interruptions.

For a local transport tip, don't assume a short trip across Phuket will be quick. The road between Patong and Phuket Old Town can feel slow, especially when traffic builds. Allow extra time if you're heading there for dinner or an evening stroll.
