April heat

Bangkok feels seriously hot in April. Daytime highs reach 37°C, matching March, while nights stay warm at 26°C. Humidity adds to the sticky feeling, and rain falls on several days, often in short, heavy bursts. May is wetter, so April usually gives you more room for outdoor plans.

The heat makes long walks around the Grand Palace or Wat Pho tiring by midday. Visit these sights early, then spend the hottest hours in an air-conditioned mall or museum. Evenings work well for dinner around Yaowarat, Bangkok's Chinatown, where you can sample dishes like pad thai and mango sticky rice.

Songkran in the city

Songkran, the Thai New Year, falls in April. Water fights fill parts of Bangkok, especially around Khao San Road and Silom. It's a lively way to join a local celebration, but expect soaked clothes, traffic changes and busy streets. Keep your phone in a waterproof case if you're joining in.

April is outside Bangkok's cooler, popular winter season, so the city can feel less packed than in December and January. Hotel prices may also be lower than during those peak months, though Songkran brings extra demand near the celebrations. Taking the BTS or MRT between sights is a welcome break from the heat. During Songkran, use them to reach Silom, then check station exits before heading into water fights; some streets around the celebrations can be difficult to cross dry.
