April: heat shapes the day

Vientiane is very hot in April. Afternoons can feel sticky, with highs around 37°C and nights staying warm. Rain falls on several days, but it doesn't make the month feel cool. The weather earns a poor comfort rating.

You'll enjoy indoor stops such as the COPE Visitor Centre or the cool halls of the Lao National Museum more than long walks at midday. Save That Luang for a gentler part of the day, and avoid planning a full afternoon on foot along the Mekong. The heat can make even short sightseeing feel tiring.

Lao New Year brings water

Lao New Year, known as Pi Mai, falls in April and is marked with water celebrations. In Vientiane, expect splashing and lively street scenes around the holiday. Some shops and services may close, while local families travel or gather with relatives.

If you hate crowds, avoid the main celebration areas during Pi Mai and visit quieter sights instead. If you're keen to join in, wear clothes you don't mind getting soaked and keep your phone protected.

Quieter, but not always

April is generally less busy with international visitors than December and January, Vientiane's best-weather months. You may find a calmer city and better-value stays than in peak season. Pi Mai is the exception: local travel can make transport and popular areas busier around the holiday.

For a useful local break, stop at a café near the Mekong riverside after sightseeing. Try khao piak sen, a comforting noodle soup, rather than setting off for another long walk in the heat. May brings more rain, so April can still suit a short city visit if you plan around the afternoon warmth.
