February: warm and mostly dry

February feels warm by day, with cooler evenings. The sun comes out often, and rain is limited, so it's a good month for temples, riverside walks and a trip to Buddha Park. You can enjoy the Mekong promenade without planning around frequent showers.

Afternoons can feel hot, especially on foot around Patuxai and the city centre. Save longer walks for later in the day, and don't expect much shade at Buddha Park. The heat is already building: March is hotter and wetter, while January is cooler and drier.

Festivals and local life

Magha Puja, also called Boun Khao Chi in Laos, may fall in February. The date follows the lunar calendar, so it can shift. If it does, temples such as Wat Si Saket take on a quieter, more devotional feel as people make offerings and attend ceremonies.

Lunar New Year can also land in February, bringing celebrations in parts of Vientiane with Chinese communities. Dates vary, so the city's calendar won't be the same every year. Travelling with kids? Buddha Park's unusual statues make for an easy outing, but the open grounds offer little shade.

Crowds and practical tips

February is still part of the dry-season travel period, so you'll see more visitors than in the wet months. It's usually less busy than the peak holiday stretch around December and January, though popular sights can still draw groups. Prices may be easing after the busiest months, but don't count on low-season deals.

For Wat Si Saket, take time in the shaded cloisters to view its rows of small Buddha images. They offer a calmer pause from the sunny streets outside. If you're visiting during a temple festival, dress modestly and follow local worshippers' lead.
