Vientiane Weather in October

October: warm and showery

Vientiane stays hot, with highs around 30°C and lows near 22°C. Rain falls on about 12 days, and the humidity can make afternoons feel sticky. Showers are less frequent than in September, but October isn't dry yet.

You can still visit Pha That Luang, Wat Si Saket and the Mekong riverfront. Keep outdoor sightseeing flexible: rain can interrupt a long walk or make roads outside the centre muddy. Save a café stop or the COPE Visitor Centre for a wet spell.

Boat races and temple visits

October often brings Boun Ok Phansa, the festival marking the end of Buddhist Lent. Vientiane's boat racing festival is held around this time, with teams racing on the Mekong. Dates follow the lunar calendar, so the event can fall on different days each year. Crowds gather by the river, and temple ceremonies add a quieter side to the celebrations.

If you hate crowds, visit the riverfront outside race time and explore Wat Si Muang instead. It's a well-known local shrine, and a calmer stop when the festival draws people towards the water.

Quieter than the dry season

October is generally less busy than December and January, Vientiane's popular dry-season months. September is wetter, while November brings a sharp drop in rain. You'll likely find the city easier to navigate than during the peak season, though festival days can be busy around the Mekong.

Practical tip: if you're going to the boat races, ask your hotel which roads near the river will be closed. The main viewing area is along the Mekong in central Vientiane, so walking there may be simpler than trying to get a tuk-tuk through traffic.
