April heat at Angkor

April is hot and sticky in Siem Reap, with highs around 36°C and nights near 26°C. It's a little cooler than March, but still a tough month for long walks among Angkor Wat's temples. Rain falls on 13 days, and cloud often softens the sun, though showers can interrupt a day out.

Angkor Wat works best early, before the stones and paths hold the day's heat. Save the Angkor National Museum or a shaded café in town for the hottest part of the day. Tonlé Sap boat trips can be less comfortable in sticky weather, so avoid setting out when the heat feels overwhelming.

New Year celebrations

Cambodian New Year, Choul Chnam Thmey, falls in April. Siem Reap celebrates with Angkor Sankranta, an event around the Angkor temples with cultural performances and festive activities. April is usually quieter than December and January, Siem Reap's more comfortable peak season. You'll often find less pressure at major sights and better hotel deals than in those busy months. Around Cambodian New Year, though, local crowds can make popular temple areas and central streets livelier.

At Angkor Wat, use the covered galleries for a pause between outdoor sections. In town, try fish amok, a mild coconut curry, when you want a sit-down meal away from the temple heat. May brings more rain, so April offers a drier window, but it's still a poor month for comfort.
