July: wet and heavy

July in Siem Reap feels hot, sticky and often cloudy. Rain falls on many days, and the high humidity can make temple visits tiring. Showers may interrupt outdoor plans, so leave room to change course rather than trying to fit several distant sights into one day.

Angkor Wat and the Bayon are still worth seeing, especially when cloud softens the light on their stone carvings. But wet paths can be slippery, and long walks in the heat may feel draining. Save time for the Angkor National Museum or a meal in town if rain sets in.

What's on

There isn't a major fixed festival that draws visitors to Siem Reap in July. Buddhist Lent, called Vassa, often begins around this time, though its date varies. Monks spend the rainy season at their monasteries, and you may notice a quieter, more reflective mood at local temples.

Families travelling with children may find shorter temple visits and indoor breaks easier than a full day among the ruins.

Quieter, with a local tip

July is low season compared with the drier months, especially December. You'll usually encounter fewer visitors at the temples, and hotel prices are often lower than during the peak season. The trade-off is frequent rain and less sunshine, so beach-style weather isn't on the cards.

At Ta Prohm, rain can make the root-covered paths slick. Take care on the uneven stones, and consider visiting one temple at a time instead of rushing between sites. If a downpour catches you near the Old Market, pause for a bowl of kuy teav, a Cambodian noodle soup, before heading back out.
