Visiting Luang Prabang in November
November weather
November feels warm and mostly dry in Luang Prabang. Days reach 29°C, while evenings cool to 18°C. Rain falls on about five days, far less often than in October, so you can explore temple grounds and walk the old town without often ducking indoors.
The Kuang Si Falls trail and Mount Phousi's steps are easier to enjoy when paths are less muddy. The Mekong is also a good choice for a boat trip. Afternoons can still feel sticky, though, so save long walks for cooler parts of the day. If you're hoping for lush, rain-fed waterfalls, October is usually wetter.
Festivals and local calendar
November has no major fixed public holiday in Luang Prabang. Boun That Luang, a large Buddhist festival, is held in Vientiane, not here, so don't plan a trip to Luang Prabang around it. The Luang Prabang Film Festival is usually held in December, though dates can vary.
You may still see temple ceremonies and local celebrations, but they aren't a guaranteed November event. For a quieter cultural visit, Wat Xieng Thong and the old town's morning alms-giving offer plenty to experience without a festival crowd.
Crowds and practical tips
November marks the start of the busy, dry-season stretch. Guesthouses and Mekong-side restaurants get fuller than in the rainy months, and prices tend to rise. It's still generally less packed than December and January, Luang Prabang's best-known peak months.
If you hate crowds, visit the night market early, before Sisavangvong Road fills up. Travelling with kids? The cooler evenings are pleasant for a relaxed stroll along the riverfront. For Kuang Si Falls, take the shared minivan from town and ask to be dropped at the entrance; the walk from there to the pools is straightforward, but the trail can still be slippery after rain.
