May: hot and rainy

Luang Prabang in May feels sticky, with highs around 34°C and warm nights. Rain falls on many days, and thick cloud often dims the sunshine. Showers can interrupt a temple visit or a walk through the old town, so keep plans flexible. The rain also feeds the waterfalls, but paths can turn slick.

A slow morning around Wat Xieng Thong or the Royal Palace Museum works better than a long afternoon outdoors. Save Mount Phousi's steps for a dry spell; wet stone can be slippery. If you hate crowds, May is quieter than the popular December and January season.

May events and quieter streets

Visakha Bousa, a Buddhist holiday marking the Buddha's birth, enlightenment and death, may fall in May. Its date changes each year. If it does, you may see temple ceremonies and offerings in Luang Prabang. Keep your voice low and give worshippers room.

May is generally a quieter, lower-season month than the dry-season peak. You'll often find fewer visitors around the night market and old town, and accommodation may cost less than in December or January. It's not guaranteed, though, especially around a holiday.

Make room for the rain

Travelling with kids? Keep a rainy-day option in reserve, such as the Royal Palace Museum, rather than counting on a full day at Kuang Si Falls. After heavy rain, trails there may be muddy and slippery.

For a practical local tip, take a tuk-tuk to Kuang Si instead of relying on a rented scooter when roads are wet. You can still enjoy the falls in a brief dry spell, then head back to the old town for khao soi, a Luang Prabang noodle soup.
