Haiphong Weather in September

September feels sticky

September in Haiphong is hot, humid and often rainy. Days reach 30°C, and nights stay warm at 25°C. Rain falls on 21 days, with thick cloud and little daily sunshine, so expect showers to interrupt plans. August is wetter, but September is still a poor month for weather.

You can still explore central Haiphong between showers, stopping at Hai Phong Museum or Du Hang Pagoda. A bowl of bánh đa cua, the city's crab noodle soup, makes a good break when rain rolls in. Long beach days at Do Son are less reliable, and wet weather can make a trip towards Cat Ba less enjoyable.

National Day and quieter streets

Vietnam's National Day falls on September 2. It can bring local celebrations and more domestic travel around the holiday, so the city may feel busier then. Outside that period, September is generally quieter than the peak winter months, when Haiphong's weather is more comfortable.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the holiday and enjoy a calmer city. September's rain and heat tend to mean fewer visitors than in the best months, December to February. That can make this a lower-season time to visit, though don't assume every hotel or ferry fare will be cheaper.

Make room for rain

Keep plans flexible. Choose sights in town for rainy spells, then head to Do Son when the sky clears. October is a better bet for outdoor time: it's cooler and much drier than September.

Travelling with kids? Build in indoor breaks rather than counting on a full beach day. For a local fix, try bánh đa cua at a central Haiphong restaurant; the noodles are made from reddish rice sheets and served with crab. If you're taking the ferry towards Cat Ba, ask locally about conditions before setting out, since September's frequent rain can disrupt a day built around the crossing.
