Visiting Tianshui in July
July: warm, wet and only fair
Tianshui feels warm and often damp in July. Afternoons reach 31°C, and evenings cool to around 19°C. Rain falls on 15 days, and humidity stays high, so even a short wet spell can make walking feel sticky. Cloud cover is common, but you still get some sunshine between the showers. That mix is why this month rates only 5.2 out of 10.
Rain doesn't rule out sightseeing, but it does interrupt outdoor plans. Fuxi Temple and Tianshui's old streets work well between showers, so you can stop when the sky opens up and carry on when it clears. Maijishan's cliffside grottoes are a different story. The steps and narrow paths get slippery when wet, so save that visit for a drier stretch. Hikers should expect muddy trails that can spoil a longer walk.
If you want to avoid the wet weather altogether, the nearby towns of Qingyang (214 km) and Zhongwei (330 km) both rate Good this month. Still, for Tianshui itself, April is the best month overall, with milder weather than July.
Summer break and crowds
July has no major nationwide public holiday, but Chinese schools are on summer break, so families head to the popular sights. Maijishan can feel busier than it does in quieter months. Accommodation and transport may cost more than in spring or late autumn, especially on weekends, so book ahead if you can.
Families with children may enjoy the cooler evenings around Fuxi Temple, but should leave room in the schedule for rain delays. If you can travel outside the summer rush, you'll find milder weather and fewer visitors.
Make room for showers
Keep a few indoor stops in your plans. Tianshui Museum is a useful rainy-day option, and the local speciality guagua, soft, savoury buckwheat noodles, makes a good meal after a damp outing.
Before you set out for Maijishan, ask locally whether the cliff galleries are open after heavy rain. The grottoes sit high on a steep sandstone cliff, and the access involves narrow stairs and walkways. Don't force the visit in poor conditions. Wait for a dry spell for the climb, and if the weather turns, spend the afternoon at Fuxi Temple instead.
