July is Lanzhou's warmest month, with afternoons reaching 31°C and nights cooling to 17°C. Rain falls on 15 days, so expect showers and cloudy spells rather than steady sunshine. It's warmer and wetter than June, and nearly as wet as August.

The Yellow River waterfront, Zhongshan Bridge and Gansu Provincial Museum still make good outings. But rain can interrupt long walks, and sticky afternoons aren't ideal for strenuous climbs up Baita Mountain. Save indoor sights for a wet spell.

Events and crowds

There's no major nationwide public holiday in July, but school breaks bring more Chinese family travellers. The riverfront and popular sights can feel busier than in spring or autumn. Accommodation may also cost more than in April, May or October, Lanzhou's more comfortable travel months.

If you hate crowds, visit the Yellow River sights on a weekday and keep your plans flexible for rain.

Getting around Lanzhou in July

July can suit a city break if you mix outdoor stops with museums and meals. Try Lanzhou beef noodles in the morning, when many local noodle shops serve them fresh. Ask for "niu rou mian" (beef noodles) if you need the name.

A useful local tip: Zhongshan Bridge crosses the Yellow River, while Baita Mountain sits just above it. Do the bridge and riverside first, then save the uphill walk for a cooler, dry spell. If rain rolls in, head to the Gansu Provincial Museum instead.
