When to go to Lanzhou: a seasonal guide
Spring and autumn: the sweet spots
April and May are the easiest months here. Days are mild, and by May you can walk the Yellow River waterfront in a shirt. Evenings still cool off, so you'll want a jacket by the water. March is early but pleasant, and it's drier, though nights are still near freezing.
Autumn works just as well. September and October bring cooler air and fewer rainy afternoons as the month goes on. October is the better pick of the two, since September is one of the wetter, cloudier months. If you want to climb Baita Mountain (White Pagoda Hill) for the city view, this is when the air feels best.
Summer: warm, wetter, and busy
June to August is the warmest stretch, with July the hottest at 31°C. It's not scorching, and Lanzhou is a good break from the hotter lowlands of China. But rain falls on about half the days in July and August, usually in short bursts. Carry a small umbrella for walks along the Zhongshan Bridge.
This is also high season, because Chinese families travel in the school holidays and use Lanzhou as a base for Gansu. If you're heading on to Zhangye's rainbow hills or the Mogao Caves in Dunhuang, expect busier trains and fuller hotels. Summer is when you'll find the riverside lively late into the evening, with people eating lamb skewers outdoors.
Winter: cold, dry, and quiet
December and January are cold, with lows around -7°C in January. They're also dry and fairly sunny. Hardly any rain falls, so it's a good time for the museums. The Gansu Provincial Museum, home to the Flying Horse bronze, is a fine way to spend a cold afternoon. And a steaming bowl of Lanzhou beef noodles (lamian) tastes best on a day like this.
Winter is low season, so you'll get quiet sights and easy hotel choices. The big exception is Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, when many shops close and people travel home. Lunar New Year can make trains busy, even if tourist sites feel calm.
If you're after a first visit with good weather and few surprises, aim for May or October. Want the fewest crowds? Go in November, which is dry and clear, though you'll need a proper coat.
