Best Time to Visit Xining

Spring: April and May are the sweet spot

Winter loosens its grip in March, but April is when Xining starts to feel easy. Days are mild, nights are still near freezing, and rain is light. By May it's warmer, with showers on about every other day. They're usually short.

At 2,275 metres, the air is thin and the sun is strong even when it's cool. Give yourself a day to adjust before climbing anything. Spring suits a city break. You can walk the old streets around the Great Mosque (Dongguan Mosque), eat a bowl of hand-pulled noodles, and visit Tibetan Buddhist Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Si) in nearby Huangzhong without sweating through it.

Summer: green hills, busy roads

June to August is the warm season, and it's also the wettest. August is the wettest month, with showers on most days. Still, this is when the grasslands around Qinghai Lake turn green and the rapeseed fields bloom, usually in July. Travelling with kids or after big landscapes? This is your window.

It's also high season. Chinese families come in school holidays, so hotels fill and prices rise around Qinghai Lake. Xining itself stays cooler than most Chinese cities, which is a real draw. Rain tends to arrive in the afternoon, so plan outdoor views for the morning and museums for later. The Qinghai Tibet Culture Museum is a good wet-day stop. The Qinghai Lake cycling race usually runs in July, so expect road closures near the lake then.

Autumn: clear and quiet

September is still wet and humid, which makes it the least pleasant autumn month. October is the better bet. Rain drops off, the air feels crisp, and you'll find fewer visitors once China's early October holiday week ends. That week is packed, so avoid it if you can.

Mid-autumn evenings get cold fast, so a warm jacket matters for dusk walks along the Huangshui River. November is dry and sunny but chilly, and it's a fair choice if you only want the city and a good hotpot.

Winter: cold, dry and cheap

December and January are the coldest months, with nights around -10°C or lower. Skies are dry and fairly sunny, though, and it's the quietest time of year. Many lakeside and mountain sights close or become hard to reach. If you're happy with museums, mosques, teahouses and bowls of steaming noodles, you'll get the city almost to yourself. Otherwise, wait for spring.
