Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April and May are the easiest months here. Days are warm but not hot, evenings are cool, and the air is dry. In April you'll want a jacket after dark, since lows are still near 5°C. By May it's t-shirt weather at lunchtime.

September and October are just as good. September is a little wetter, but showers are short. October turns crisp and clear, with golden leaves along the Yellow River, which runs right past Wuzhong. If you want to walk, cycle or look around without sweating, pick one of these four months.

Summer: hot days, green fields

June to August is warm to hot. July is the hottest month, with highs around 34°C and nights near 20°C. August is the wettest, but even then the rain is modest and usually comes as a brief storm. Afternoons are best spent indoors or in the shade.

This is the time for a trip with kids. Schools are out, and families head for the Yellow River and the nearby Qingtongxia area. Those weeks are the busiest and the most expensive. Midday outings to open spots like the Qingtongxia Buddhist pagoda cluster (108 dagobas, or stupa-style towers, climbing a hillside) can feel harsh, so go in the early evening instead.

Winter: quiet and very cold

December and January are the coldest and the only months rated Poor. Days stay near freezing, nights drop to about -11°C, and the wind off the north can bite. The upside is clear, dry weather and almost no tourists. Hotels are quiet and you'll have sights mostly to yourself.

February is still cold but starts to ease. Chinese New Year usually falls in late January or February, and many local shops and restaurants close for several days. Travel across China is also heavy then, so trains and roads fill up.

November and March are in-between months. Both are Good, with cold nights and mild afternoons. They suit you if you like quiet places and don't mind a warm coat.

Which month for which trip

For hiking or photos, choose late April, May or October. For a family holiday that fits school breaks, July and August work, with heat as the trade-off. Hate crowds? Go in March, November or the weeks just after China's early October National Day holiday, when the whole country travels and attractions get packed. Many people will tell you to skip the first week of October for that reason, and it's good advice.
