September: mild days by the Yellow River

September is a comfortable time to explore Wuzhong. Afternoons are warm rather than scorching, while evenings feel cool. It's a welcome change from August's hotter days. Rain falls on some days, but showers shouldn't rule out a visit.

You can spend a clear day at Qingtongxia's 108 Pagodas or take in the Yellow River scenery. The cooler weather also suits walks around the city. Avoid making a long outdoor outing your only plan; rain can interrupt it, and October is drier.

Festivals and crowds

The Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in September. It's a major Chinese holiday, but its date changes each year, so it doesn't always land in this month. If it does, expect more domestic travellers around the holiday.

If you hate crowds, September is still a calmer choice than China's National Day holiday, which begins in October. Wuzhong is not as busy as China's best-known tourist cities, though autumn is one of its better travel seasons. Prices may be higher than in quieter winter months, but don't expect the same holiday rush as early October.

A good time for a local stop

September's pleasant weather makes it easier to combine sights with a meal in town. Try Wuzhong's hand-grabbed mutton, a local dish of tender lamb eaten by hand. It's especially welcome after a day outdoors.

Travelling with kids? The 108 Pagodas make a manageable outing, but the site is exposed, so a rainy or cloudy day can feel less enjoyable. Check the forecast before setting off from Wuzhong, and keep a city meal as your backup plan.
