Visiting Wuzhong in February
February: cold winter days
February in Wuzhong feels wintry, with chilly mornings and evenings and some milder afternoons. The average high is 6°C, while nights can fall to -6°C. It's fairly dry, with rain on about one day, but the cold can make long outdoor visits tiring.
You can still explore the China Western Film Studio or visit the Yellow River sights around Qingtongxia. Pick shorter outings, then warm up over a meal in town. February isn't ideal for lingering by the river or spending a full day outdoors. The weather is milder than January, but March brings a noticeable rise in daytime temperatures.
Holiday dates can change the mood
The Spring Festival, China's Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in February. When it does, expect more people travelling, altered opening hours and busy transport around the holiday. The Lantern Festival, held on the fifteenth day of the lunar new year, may also land in February. Its date changes each year.
If you hate crowds, avoid travelling during the main Spring Festival rush. Outside these holiday periods, February is usually a quieter, low-season month. You'll generally find fewer visitors than in April and May or September and October, Wuzhong's more popular travel months. Don't assume every restaurant or attraction will keep its usual hours during the holiday.
Make the cold work for you
Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor sightseeing short, and plan a warm indoor break between stops.
A good February plan is to visit the Wuzhong Mosque area, then try local halal lamb dishes nearby. The cold makes a hot bowl of lamb soup especially welcome. For a river outing, check conditions before heading to Qingtongxia's 108 Pagodas; the open setting can feel colder than town. February's shorter daylight also means you'll have less time for unhurried outdoor visits than in spring.
