Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April, May, September and October are the months to aim for. Days are mild to warm, nights are cool, and the air is dry. April can still feel crisp after dark. May is warmer, with highs of 26°C. September matches that, and October turns cooler and calmer.

These months suit the Shapotou desert area best. Shapotou sits where the Tengger Desert meets the Yellow River. You can slide down the dunes, ride a sheepskin raft on the river and walk the old railway grass grids that stop the sand from moving. Without a fierce midday sun, it's far easier to enjoy. Sunsets over the dunes are the real prize.

Summer: hot, green and busy

June to August is warm to hot. July is the hottest month, with highs of 33°C and nights around 20°C. Rain comes in short bursts, and August is the wettest month, with 47 mm over 9 days. It won't ruin a trip, but dunes can feel slippery and skies can turn grey.

This is also high season. Chinese school holidays start in July, and Shapotou fills with families. Travelling with kids? It works well, since camel rides and the sand slides are made for them. If you hate crowds, go on a weekday and stay out of the national holiday weeks. Midday on the dunes gets properly hot, so save the sand for late afternoon and use the middle of the day for the shade of Gaomiao, a temple complex in town with Buddhist, Confucian and Taoist halls.

Winter: cold, quiet and cheap-ish

December and January are the coldest months, with lows near -9°C and -8°C. January is slightly colder at night, while December has the sunnier skies and almost no rain. Days stay dry, but the cold bites, especially by the river. Many outdoor activities slow down or close, and the dunes feel empty and still.

Winter suits you if you like solitude and cold, clear light. Expect few other visitors. Many travellers pair Zhongwei with a trip to Yinchuan and its nearby sights, but the desert is the main draw, so a winter visit is a trade-off. For the Chinese New Year holiday in late January or February, local tourist spots can get lively for a few days, so expect pockets of crowds.

March and November are the in-between months. Both are dry and fairly bright, but March can bring wind and sand in the air. November is quiet, cool and good if you want fewer people at a fair pace.
