The weather suits walking around Shapotou, where the Yellow River meets the desert, and taking in the dunes without September's warmer afternoons. You can also enjoy Zhongwei's city sights and local food without spending the day dodging heat. Save long outdoor plans for dry spells; October still gets some rain.

Cool nights and holiday crowds

The National Day holiday falls in early October and brings many Chinese travellers onto the roads and trains. Shapotou can feel crowded then, and accommodation and transport may cost more than in quieter parts of the month. Outside the holiday, October is shoulder season: it's generally calmer and less costly than busy summer periods.

Families who want easier sightseeing may prefer the weeks after the holiday, when you can explore at a more relaxed pace. Even then, evenings are cool, so outdoor dining by the Yellow River may not feel comfortable for long.
