China's National Day holiday brings a busy start to October. Trains and popular sights can be crowded, and hotel prices may rise compared with quieter autumn weeks. After the holiday, Qingyang is usually calmer and prices tend to ease. October isn't the cheapest time everywhere, but it's generally less crowded than the National Day rush.

Mid-Autumn Festival sometimes falls in October, depending on the lunar calendar. If it does, expect more family travel and festive foods such as mooncakes. If you hate crowds, visit later in the month, after the holiday rush has passed.

October is drier than September, which gets much more rain, but wetter than November. The shorter days leave less time for a long outing, so pair the North Grotto Temple with a nearby stop rather than trying to cover too much.

The cliffside setting is worth seeing, but slippery paths can make the visit less comfortable.
