January is not the best time to visit Zhongwei (3.7/10) mainly because of the cold. The weather is much better in April to May and September to October.
Visiting Zhongwei in January
January feels sharply cold
January in Zhongwei is deep winter, and the cold is the main reason it rates poorly. Afternoons reach about 2°C, but nights drop to -9°C, so the chill lingers well after sunset. It's usually dry, with only a little rain, and you'll get some sunshine between cloudy spells. The short days leave less time for outings, which is why this month scores 3.7 out of 10.
If you want to be outside for longer, April to May and September to October are much kinder. A walk around Zhongwei's old town or a visit to Gao Temple can still work well in January if you go in daylight. The open desert at Shapotou is less forgiving, though. Cold winds and freezing evenings can make a long visit uncomfortable, so save those leisurely outdoor plans for a milder month.
Holidays and a quieter town
New Year's Day is a public holiday in China. Chinese New Year sometimes falls in January, but its date changes each year. If it does, expect travel crowds and closures around the holiday, since many businesses shut as people return home.
Outside that holiday period, January is quieter than the popular spring and autumn months. You'll likely find fewer visitors at Shapotou, and prices are generally lower than during those busier seasons. For budget travellers, the trade-off is real: you'll have less choice and less comfort outdoors in exchange for a calmer visit.
Make the cold work for you
Plan outdoor sightseeing for the sunnier part of the day, then keep your evenings close to town. At Shapotou, ask locally which activities are running before you travel out there, since winter conditions can limit what's available.
If you're visiting around Chinese New Year, check whether Gao Temple and nearby restaurants are open before you set out. A warm bowl of Ningxia lamb noodles makes a welcome stop after a cold walk, and it's easier to find in town than out by the desert.
