Visiting Yinchuan in January
January: cold, dry days
January feels properly wintry in Yinchuan. Daytime highs reach about 1°C, while nights can fall to -11°C. It's usually dry, with plenty of sunshine, but the cold can make long outdoor visits tiring.
The Ningxia Museum is a good choice for a warmer break, with exhibits on the region's history and the Western Xia. If you visit the Western Xia Tombs, expect open, exposed ground and little shelter from the cold. Save long walks around Helan Mountain for milder weather.
Quiet sights and holiday changes
January is low season, so you'll generally find fewer visitors and better-value stays than in the spring or autumn. The main exception is the Spring Festival, or Chinese New Year, which sometimes falls in January. Dates change each year, and travel can get busier around the holiday as people visit family.
If you hate crowds, the quieter weeks can suit you well. Just don't expect every restaurant or shop to keep normal hours during Spring Festival. The Laba Festival, a traditional winter holiday, may also fall in January; its date follows the lunar calendar.
Make the cold work for you
Plan a shorter outdoor stop at the Western Xia Tombs, then warm up over a bowl of hand-grabbed lamb, a local Ningxia favourite. The clear, dry weather can make sightseeing easier than on wet days, but icy spells may make exposed paths unpleasant. Skip a long hike in the Helan Mountains unless conditions look suitable.
Travelling with kids? Put the Ningxia Museum first, then choose just one outdoor sight. January has only about 9.6 hours of daylight, so the day feels short. Check the Spring Festival dates before choosing your travel week.
