Cool, bright autumn days

October feels crisp in Xining, and it's one of the more pleasant months to be here. Afternoons are mild, but the chill comes back fast once the sun drops, and nights can get close to freezing. The good news is that rain is far less common than in September, so you'll usually get clearer stretches for exploring the city.

The weather suits a walk around Dongguan Mosque or a visit to the Qinghai Tibetan Culture Museum. Ta'er Monastery makes a good day trip too, since its courtyards and mountain setting are easier to enjoy without summer rain. Just plan your outdoor time for the middle of the day, before the cold settles in.

National Day crowds

China's National Day holiday brings a busy start to the month, so expect crowds at popular sights and on the trains as people travel around the country. Once the holiday ends, Xining settles down and sees fewer visitors than in the summer peak. Prices tend to ease too, though they can climb during the holiday itself.

If crowds put you off, aim for Dongguan Mosque after the holiday and keep the first week of your plans flexible. Nearby Zhongwei, Wuzhong and Yinchuan all rate Excellent this month, so they're worth a look if you're open to a wider trip. Still, April and May remain the best months to visit Xining overall, while October gives you a quieter autumn feel once the holiday rush passes.

Handling the altitude

Xining sits high above sea level, so the cool air can feel sharper than you expect, especially in the evening. Keep outdoor sightseeing to daylight hours, then warm up in a restaurant near Mojia Street with a bowl of hand-pulled noodles.

Travelling with kids? Pick a shorter visit to Ta'er Monastery instead of cramming several far-flung sights into one day. The drive takes time, and a long outing can wear everyone out before the afternoon cools.
