August is mild by day, cool after dark, and often damp. You'll get a mix of cloud and sun, with rain on many days. The showers can interrupt long walks, but they needn't spoil a visit to Dongguan Mosque or the old lanes around it. Keep flexible plans: save the Qinghai Lake trip for a clearer spell, and enjoy indoor stops when rain sets in.

If you're hiking around Ta'er Monastery, expect slippery paths after showers. Xining sits high, so take the monastery visit at an easy pace if you're not used to the altitude.

Events and crowds

There isn't a major fixed August holiday in Xining. China's school summer break is underway, though, so families travel and popular trips can feel busy. Qinghai Lake is a common summer outing from the city.

If you hate crowds, visit Ta'er Monastery on a weekday rather than joining the weekend flow. August is high season, so rooms and transport can cost more than in April or May, two of Xining's better months overall. September is cooler and drier, and can be a quieter choice.

Making the most of it

Rain doesn't mean every day is a washout. With long daylight, you can fit in a city visit, then take a break in a teahouse or try local hand-pulled noodles. Avoid relying on a tight schedule for a full-day drive to Qinghai Lake; wet weather can cloud the views and make the journey less rewarding.

A practical local tip: use Xining Railway Station for the train to Qinghai Lake's area, rather than assuming the lake is a quick city outing. Check the route and onward transport before you set off, especially in rainy weather.
