December: cold and bright

December feels like proper winter in Xining. Afternoons reach about 4°C, but nights drop to around -10°C, and the city's high elevation can make the cold feel sharper. It's usually dry, with plenty of sunshine, but the short days leave less time for outdoor stops.

You can still visit the indoor halls and courtyards at Ta'er Monastery, or explore the city's museums and Dongguan Mosque between warm-up breaks. Save long walks for the sunnier part of the day. A day trip to Qinghai Lake is less appealing in the cold; the lakeside can feel exposed, and many summer services are limited.

Quiet season, few events

December is low season, so Xining is generally quieter than in summer, when Qinghai Lake draws more visitors. You're also less likely to face peak-season prices for rooms and tours, though opening hours and transport options can be reduced in winter.

There isn't a major citywide festival to plan a December visit around. Christmas may bring decorations to shopping centres, but it isn't a public holiday in China. If you hate crowds, this is a calmer time to see Ta'er Monastery, though some outdoor areas may feel chilly.

Make the cold work for you

Use the bright middle of the day for sights, then duck into a warm restaurant for a bowl of Xining's beef noodles. The dry air and winter sun can make a short city outing more comfortable than a long stretch outdoors, but icy patches are possible after dark.

Travelling with kids? Keep visits flexible and use indoor stops between outdoor sights. At Ta'er Monastery, check local transport back to Xining before you go; winter services may not match the summer schedule.
