July: hot and showery

July is Xi'an's hottest month, tied with August, and the heat can feel sticky. Highs reach 34°C, with rain on 16 days. Showers can interrupt plans, while cloud and limited sunshine make the weather feel less like a dry, sunny summer break.

The Terracotta Army and Shaanxi History Museum are still worth visiting, but long outdoor stretches can feel draining. Save the City Wall or a walk around the Big Wild Goose Pagoda for cooler parts of the day. Skip strenuous hikes in the hills if the heat or rain makes the paths uncomfortable.

Summer break crowds

Chinese school holidays bring families to Xi'an in July and August. Expect busy queues at the Terracotta Army and more competition for rooms than in the quieter shoulder months of March, April and October. Prices can rise with summer demand, though July isn't the only busy month.

If you hate crowds, go to the Muslim Quarter later in the evening, when you can browse its food stalls after the hottest part of the day. Try roujiamo, a crisp bun filled with chopped meat.

Make rain work for you

July doesn't have one major fixed festival that reliably falls in the city every year. The summer-holiday rush is the main seasonal change, so don't build your visit around a festival date.

For a practical rainy-day plan, use the Xi'an Metro to reach the Shaanxi History Museum, then take the short walk to the Big Wild Goose Pagoda when the rain eases. Travelling with kids? The museum offers a cooler, mostly indoor break from the heat, but entry arrangements can be strict, so check its current visitor rules before setting out.
