Visiting Xi'an in August
August: hot and humid
Xi'an feels sticky in August, with hot afternoons and warm nights. Rain comes often, sometimes in heavy bursts, and cloudy skies can make the heat feel close. The weather is a poor fit for long walks in the open, especially around the Terracotta Army or along the City Wall at midday.
The Shaanxi History Museum and the indoor halls at the Terracotta Army work better when the afternoon feels stifling. Keep outdoor visits for cooler parts of the day, and leave room to change plans if rain arrives. After dark, the Muslim Quarter is a good place to wander and try biangbiang noodles, broad, chewy noodles served with chilli and oil.
Summer crowds and costs
August falls in China's school summer holiday, so families travel in large numbers. Expect busy trains, packed sights and queues at the Terracotta Army. Hotels and transport can cost more than in quieter months, though exact prices vary. March and April, and especially October, are generally better choices for cooler sightseeing.
If you hate crowds, visit the Big Wild Goose Pagoda early in your day and save the Muslim Quarter for later, when the evening atmosphere is part of the appeal.
Events and local tips
The Qixi Festival, often called Chinese Valentine's Day, can fall in August; its date follows the lunar calendar. The Ghost Festival may also fall in August, but neither is guaranteed to land in this month every year. Don't plan your trip around a specific celebration without checking its date.
For the Terracotta Army, take the visitor shuttle from the main entrance to the excavation halls rather than walking the exposed grounds in the heat. Keep your ticket and follow the signs: the museum is outside central Xi'an, not beside the old city sights.
