Xi'an Weather in December

Cold, mostly dry days

December feels like proper winter in Xi'an. Days reach about 8°C, while nights can dip below freezing. It's much colder than November, and there's little rain, so you're more likely to face crisp, chilly air than a washout. Short daylight hours also mean less time for outdoor stops.

The Terracotta Army works well in this weather: most of your visit is inside the covered excavation halls. Back in town, the Shaanxi History Museum and the Forest of Stone Steles offer warm indoor breaks. The City Wall is still worth seeing, but cold wind can make a long walk uncomfortable.

Quiet sights and cosy food

December is outside Xi'an's main spring and autumn travel seasons. Expect fewer visitors than in October, and generally lower hotel and flight prices than during peak months. The trade-off is colder evenings and a quieter feel at some outdoor sights.

If you hate crowds, this can be a good time to explore the Bell Tower and Drum Tower area without the busiest-season crush. There isn't a major, reliably fixed December festival to plan a trip around. Christmas decorations may appear in shopping centres, but Christmas isn't a traditional local holiday.

Make the most of winter

Travelling with kids? Keep outdoor visits shorter, then warm up over yangrou paomo, a local lamb-and-bread soup. It's especially satisfying after a cold walk through the Muslim Quarter, where many stalls serve it.

At the Terracotta Army, go straight to Pit 1 first if you want to see the largest excavation hall while you're fresh. The site is outside the city, so the journey there and back can make a chilly day feel longer. In the evening, choose the lively indoor streets around the Drum Tower rather than lingering on the windy City Wall.
