Visiting Tianshui in January
Cold, mostly dry days
January feels like proper winter in Tianshui. Afternoons reach about 6°C, but mornings and nights can fall to -4°C. There's little rain, though cloud often softens the light. You'll get some sunshine, but daylight is short.
Fuxi Temple and the Tianshui Folk Museum work well for a slower sightseeing day. Maijishan Grottoes are still worth visiting, but cold paths and outdoor stairways can make a long visit uncomfortable. Save ambitious walks for milder weather, and don't expect a warm day on the hills.
Holiday timing
New Year's Day brings a short holiday in China. The Spring Festival, or Lunar New Year, sometimes falls in January; its date changes each year. If it does, expect more domestic travel and some businesses to close or reduce hours around the holiday.
Outside those holiday periods, January is quiet compared with spring and autumn. It's winter low season, so visitor numbers are usually lower and stays may cost less than in busier months. For families, the cold can make outdoor stops harder, so balance Maijishan with indoor visits in town.
A local winter tip
Near Fuxi Temple, try a bowl of Tianshui's spicy *malatang*: skewers and other ingredients cooked in a warming broth. It's a cosy meal after a chilly afternoon, though the spice can be strong.
For Maijishan, ask locally about the day's access before travelling from central Tianshui. The grottoes sit outside town, and a cold, cloudy day can feel much harsher there than among the city streets. A clear spell makes the sculptures easier to enjoy, even in winter.
