April is Tianshui's best-rated month overall, so November can be a quieter time to visit, with accommodation often less pressured than in peak periods. For couples who prefer calm temple visits to holiday queues, November is a sensible choice.

A local tip for cool days

Try Tianshui malatang, a local spicy soup made with ingredients such as noodles and vegetables. It's an easy, warming meal after walking around the city, though you can ask for less spice if you prefer.

For Maijishan, go when the day feels mild rather than saving it for late afternoon. The grottoes sit in a wooded mountain setting, and the visit involves outdoor walking between caves. Keep your city sightseeing flexible: if the clouds close in, head back toward central Tianshui for Fuxi Temple and a hot bowl of noodles.
