May is one of Shenyang's best months for walking around. Days feel mild and sunny, while evenings can still turn cool. The average high is 24°C and the low is 9°C. Rain falls on about nine days, so a shower may interrupt an outdoor plan.

You'll have long days for the Mukden Palace, also called Shenyang Imperial Palace, and the gardens around Beiling Park. Qipanshan works for a day outdoors, too. Skip plans that depend on dry weather all day; rain is more common than in April, and June is wetter still.

Holidays and crowds

Labour Day, on 1 May, brings a major holiday travel rush across China. Shenyang's popular sights, including the Mukden Palace, can feel packed around the holiday. Trains and hotels may also cost more than on ordinary May weekdays.

If you hate crowds, visit outside the Labour Day break and choose a weekday for the palace. Away from the holiday, May is a pleasant spring visit and usually calmer than the busy summer months. Prices can rise again in summer, though exact costs depend on your dates.

Make the most of your visit

May's comfortable weather suits city walks and sightseeing better than a tightly packed schedule of outdoor activities. Give yourself room to move a museum visit indoors if rain arrives. At night, the cooler air makes a stroll through Zhongshan Square more appealing than lingering outside for hours.
