Shenyang is properly cold in December. Days reach about -4°C, while nights drop to around -14°C. It's also dry, with little rain, but the short daylight and low comfort score make long outdoor days tough.

The Imperial Palace and Marshal Zhang's Mansion still work for a visit, but their courtyards can feel bitterly cold. Keep outdoor sightseeing brief, then warm up in a museum or around Zhongjie, the central shopping district. Skip long walks in parks unless you're comfortable spending time in the cold.

The winter solstice falls in December. In northern China, families often mark it with dumplings, so it's a good time to try them at a Shenyang restaurant. Christmas isn't a major local holiday, though you may spot decorations in shopping areas.

If you hate crowds, December is a quieter choice than the warmer months. It's winter low season, so visitor numbers and accommodation prices are generally lower than in May or September, two of Shenyang's best months to visit.

Travelling with kids? Plan shorter outdoor stops and use Zhongjie for warm breaks between sights. Shenyang's metro can also help you avoid long, cold walks between central attractions.

A useful local stop is Laobian Dumplings near Zhongjie, a well-known Shenyang dumpling restaurant. Make it your warm-up after the Imperial Palace, rather than trying to spend the whole day outdoors. You'll still see the city's history, without letting the cold take over your visit.
