March: winter loosens its grip

Shenyang's March days reach about 8°C, but nights can still drop to -5°C. It feels like a slow thaw, not settled spring: sunny spells help, while shady streets can stay cold. Rain is limited, so you can explore the Mukden Palace and Zhongjie shopping street without planning around frequent showers.

Beiling Park is lovely for a walk, but paths may be muddy or slick as snow melts. Save longer outdoor outings for a milder day, and don't expect beach weather or warm evenings. A hot bowl of Northeast-style stew is a welcome finish after sightseeing.

Events and atmosphere

March doesn't bring a major fixed festival to Shenyang. Lunar New Year celebrations may run into early March in some years, but the dates change. Check whether events are happening before making them part of your trip.

If you hate crowds, March is a quieter choice than May or September, two of Shenyang's best-loved months. Hotels and flights are often less in demand than during those peak travel periods, though prices vary. You'll have more room around the Mukden Palace, but some outdoor spots can still feel wintry.

With around 11.7 hours of daylight, there's time for a museum visit and a stroll through the old city in one day. Keep your plans flexible: the gap between cold mornings and milder afternoons can be noticeable.

Travelling with kids? Pair the indoor exhibits at the Mukden Palace with a shorter walk along Zhongjie, rather than a long day in Beiling Park. In the palace grounds, watch for slick patches where melting snow lingers in the shade. A pause for hot dumplings nearby makes an easy local stop.
