November: cold, clear days

Shenyang's autumn is nearly over by November. Days feel chilly, and evenings can drop below freezing. The high is 5°C and the low is -5°C, so outdoor sightseeing is best when the sun is out. Rain is limited to about five days, but cold winds can make a walk feel tougher.

You can still explore the Mukden Palace, the former imperial palace, and nearby Zhongjie shopping street. For a longer outdoor stop, visit the grand tombs at Beiling Park, but don't expect a gentle stroll if the paths are icy. Short daylight hours also make it harder to fit in several distant sights.

Quiet season, few events

November has no major national public holiday in China, and Shenyang's big autumn travel season has passed. You'll usually find fewer visitors than in May or September, the city's more comfortable months. Hotels and flights may cost less than during peak travel periods, though prices vary.

If you hate crowds, this is a good time to see the Mukden Palace at a slower pace. You may have more room to browse Zhongjie, too. There's no need to build your trip around a major November festival; save that time for the city's history and food.

Make the cold work for you

Plan indoor sights for the coldest part of the day. The Liaoning Provincial Museum is a useful stop, while Shenyang's hot pots and dumplings make cosy meals after a walk. Try the local chicken rack, a Shenyang specialty served with bones and meat to pick at.

Travelling with kids? Keep Beiling Park as a short visit, then warm up near Zhongjie. At the Mukden Palace, ask about the indoor exhibition rooms before setting off; they're a welcome break from the cold outside.
