August can feel busier than May or September, Shenyang's better all-round months. Summer holiday visitors may add to crowds at popular sights, and prices can be higher than in those shoulder months. Rainy days may ease outdoor queues, but they can also slow your plans.

If you hate crowds, visit the Imperial Palace on a weekday and keep Zhongjie as your rainy-day fallback. The two are close, so you won't need to cross the city when the weather turns. Check the forecast before setting aside a full day for outdoor sights.
