Spring and autumn: the sweet spots

April, May, September and October all rate Excellent, and May and September score highest. May is the pick if you want long, mild days. Highs reach 24°C, and it's still dry enough for walking around Shenyang Imperial Palace, the Qing dynasty palace in the old city. Expect some rain, but showers pass quickly.

September feels similar, with warm afternoons and cooler nights. October turns crisp, and the trees in Beiling Park, home to the tomb of Emperor Huang Taiji, turn gold. April is fresh and a bit sharp in the evenings, so it suits short walks better than long days outside.

Summer: warm, wet and sticky

June is still Good. July and August are the hardest months, with rain on about two days in every three. July is the wettest and has the least sun. Afternoons feel heavy, and storms can wash out a plan.

If you come then, keep your days flexible. Spend wet hours in the Liaoning Provincial Museum or the 9.18 Historical Museum, and eat Northeastern dishes like guobaorou (crispy sweet-and-sour pork) while the rain passes. Summer is also when Chinese school holidays begin, so popular sights fill up. Prices and crowds ease again once September arrives.

Winter: cold, dry and snowy

From December to February you're in real northern China cold. January is the coldest month, with lows of -17°C. The air is dry and there's little rain, but it's a deep freeze, and snow tends to linger.

Is that a dealbreaker? Not if you like winter fun. Nearby ski areas such as Beidahu are worth the trip, and Shenyang's Qipanshan area runs winter activities too. Hot pot and steamed buns will feel very welcome after a day outdoors. Chinese New Year, usually in late January or February, brings fireworks, family travel and many closed shops, so expect the city to feel quiet and busy at once.

Crowds and shoulder months

The biggest crowds come around the early-October National Day holiday, when much of China travels. If you want that golden autumn light without the queues, aim for mid-to-late September or the second half of October. March and November are Fair: cold, grey in places and quiet. They're cheaper options if you don't mind a coat.
